My 4-year-old son is hugely into Monster Trucks and Monster Jam, so this book is a great pleaser for him. This is the perfect book for young ones who love anything with wheels on it (especially when they’re big wheels).
Great for Beginning Readers
Awesome book for beginning readers. Easy to read text and great photos of all your Monster Jam favorites. There’s even a one-page golssary at the end with simple terms like engine, body, frame and my son’s favorite new term: “mud-bogging”.

Grizzly Bear released Yellow House in 2006. It was a slow, steady and stunning ride, and given the album s otherworldly charm and staying power, it s hard to believe three years have gone by.
That might seem like a long time. But given Grizzly Bear s hectic touring schedule, including stints with Radiohead, TV On The Radio and Feist as well as several performances during a five-night tribute to Paul Simon at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, a co-headlining show with the L.A. Philharmonic, and the release of Friend, a 10-song EP of re-recorded and re-worked songs, collaborations and covers all this seems reasonable. They ve been busy.
But about a year ago, singer/songwriter Ed Droste, drummer Christopher Bear, woodwinds player/bassist Chris Taylor and singer/songwriter/guitarist Daniel Rossen who s other band, Department of Eagles, released the sublime In Ear Park last fall began passing demos around, and working together creatively in different pairs and permutations. A few months later they set off with producer/engineer Chris Taylor s mobile recording rig to begin the recording process for Veckatimest, which would unfold over the next six months in three very singular locations. And in many ways, it is the recording process that reveals this record each space catalyzing different interactions, inspirations, and ultimately, songs.
In July, the band spent three weeks at the Glen Tonche house in upstate New York. Though still finding their feet, much of the album s groundwork was laid there. After breaking briefly for the Radiohead tour in August, the band convened at a house on Cape Cod, graciously provided by Droste s grandmother, where they re-addressed and solidified the compositions they d started at Glen Tonche. Lastly, Grizzly Bear came home, to a church in NYC, to fine-tune and complete the album named Veckatimest after a tiny, uninhabited island on Cape Cod that the band visited and was inspired by, particularly liking its Native American name. Artist William O’Brien created Veckatimest s colorful, hand drawn artwork a perfect compliment to the album s enigmatic title.
There is an unbelievable clarity of sound and vision to Veckatimest: vocals (a duty shared by all band members) are sharper and more complex, arrangements are tighter, production is more venturous and lyrics more affecting. Having opened the creative dialogue at such an early stage, Grizzly Bear was able to realize these 12 songs together as a band, making it their most collaboratively compositional album to date.
This yielded an unexpected mix of material that feels more confident, mature, focused and most of all, dynamic. From songs like ‘Dory’ (a gracefully psychedelic, ever-evolving work),’Ready Able’ (a synth-y opus, and one of four songs that boasts string arrangements by composer Nico Muhly) and ‘Foreground’ (a plaintive, vocal-driven send-off, and one of two songs to feature choral arrangements also by Muhly) to more resounding pop songs like ‘Two Weeks’ (an other-worldly doo wop featuring backing vocals from Beach House s Victoria LeGrand) and ‘While You Wait For the Others’ (a triumphant and melodically cacophonous pop masterpiece), Veckatimest is an album of the highest highs and lowest lows an unbelievably diverse collection of songs that celebrates the strength of each band member, and the power of the whole. It was well worth the wait.

One of the best albums of the decade
I would compare this album to Radiohead’s In Rainbows in that its a towering example of a band at the top of its creative ability gelling together to create one cohesive vision. Whats amazing to me is that this is only Grizzly Bear’s 2nd full-on album.
To me, this record has that intangible ‘it’ quality that you cant put your finger on what makes it so appealing, but its what keeps pulling you back listen after listen.
Describing the sound on this album is a bit difficult, but I would call it a rustic, ethreal, pop-folk. But I believe that the enjoyment comes not from whatever genre you want to call it, but at appreciating the meticulous song craft that creates what is, for me, the most memorable album in years.
Sorry Animal Collective, I love you guys and your new album is great, but you just got beat out for album of the year. Highest Recommendation.

More and more often music is referenced by other bands- “oh, it sounds like so and so” or “so and so is the new blahblah”. Grizzly Bear manages to sidestep these identifiers creating it’s own music without falling into the pit of preconceived notions genres create. When I first started telling people about Grizzly Bear i’d find myself at a loss for words when asked to describe what it sounded like. Expansive, harmonic, folkish (we won’t use the term “Freak Folk” here), rockish, but always elusively avoiding falling into one definitive sound, which is the strength of this album as well as the previous one. Ideally, bands will evolve and not keep putting out different versions of the same album year after year, and Veckatimest successfully takes the next step. While their first widely known album Yellow house was soaring and symphonic, Veckatimest manages to ground itself in earthier sounds. There’s a richness to the layers and layers of harmony, the syncopation of the rhythms and the contrast of frontman Ed Droste’s expansively melodic voice to Daniel Rossen’s sharper timbre.
I admit it took several listenings to really begin to appreciate the sensitivity of the music on Veck. I was attached to the rich softness of Yellow house, the ease with which one could sink into the cradle of sound. Veckatimest is harder, a bit more masculine, but still possessing the uniqueness of their previous work. Funnily, I noticed this most when I would put my ipod on shuffle, and all of a sudden i’d find myself drawn into a song, and have to check to see who it was since I hadn’t yet memorized all the songs on the album. Inevitably, it was Veckatimest.
This album is not a complete departure from their previous work, but rather a continuation, and therefore a worthwhile investment. It’s rare that you find music that incorporates so many different elements into one beautiful package.
All I listen to
As a listener of all music (and I really mean ALL) this contemporary album takes me everywhere I want to go, yet never sounds like any of its references. “Southern Point” is at times sentimental and nostalgic post-psychedelic rock, but slaps you in the face with something like you’ve never heard the second you get comfortable. Grizzly Bear gives its nods to the defining moments of 20th century pop with arching vocals and a tad of doo-wop (that they do so well) in singles “Two Weeks” and “Cheerleader.” But as a music lover who is always interested in the less-conventional side of things, Grizzly Bear does that too–coming out of nowhere with songs like “Fine For Now” and “I Live With You” (perhaps my favorite of all). You’re left asking yourself “What year is it? And what planet am I on?”

Sweet LITTLE computer!
This is a great computer to take to a hotel…. It is not meant for solid home use; the keyboard is too small, and the memory isn’t great.
You can actually use the keyboard, but I do find myself pecking with one finger a lot, which is why I didn’t give it a five star. The speed is pretty fair, and the wireless connection is awesome. I can get a signal in a room that I could not get on my wireless laptop, which makes it a nice little computer to use in my bedroom if my husband is on our main computer. I previously had no way of connecting to the internet in that room, but thanks to this computer and our wireless system, I can.
It was easy to set up (almost no set up required), easy to figure out, for this novice, and easy to connect to the internet. The Linux, which the salesman warned me about, and my teenager told me I would hate, was not an issue at all. It doesn’t take any prevous knowledge of how to use linux. It was easy to connect to the internet at the hotel and at home.
It serves my purpose perfectly (throw in a back pack to take on vacation to connect to the internet). I haven’t really done anything with documents. It doesn’t have a lot of memory or a place to put a dvd…, but you can use a card… for memory and add an external disk drive. I wouldn’t want to type a whole lot on it. It is best for net surfing, checking e-mail…, but like I said, you can use the keyboard. It just takes a little more effort than a full size.
I bought a little mouse to go with it, and it is handy dandy! I also like the little neoprene or whatever it is called cover (quite awesome). It is great protection for it. I put the mouse and cord in a little make up bag and throw in my back pack with it.

Awesome Netbook!
Small and compact, fits perfectly in my book bag and weighs less than 3lbs. The battery life that I have experienced has been awesome, mine came with a 6-cell battery so I am looking at around 8 hours of battery life, but I haven’t timed nor tested this. I read another comment that was posted regarding the size of the netbook with the 6-cell battery in place. I agree that the pictures do not illustrate this, however, we’re talking an extra inch…maybe…in height on the backside. A plus to this extra inch is that the netbook now tilts forward which makes it easier for typing, kind of like the little “stilts” underneath a desktop keyboard. FYI, with the 6-cell battery in place it still fits in my caselogic 10.3in case/sleeve that I bought for it.
I have had my netbook for about a week now and I am really enjoying it. It gives me everything I need for school and now I don’t have to move around a cumbersome laptop, not to mention the battery life is about 2.5 times longer than most laptops.
Perfect for taking notes in class, working through excel, viewing PowerPoint, and checking email. I plan on putting it in the kitchen when I am done with grad school so my wife and I can store recipes or anything else we may need. With the wireless hook up and the compact size for $350 this netbook is a great addition to your home network.
One thing to remember, most netbooks (if not all) do not have CD/DVD Drives, so loading software such as MS Office will require you to purchase an external Disc Drive, about $100, or you will have to borrow a friend’s to load your software. The other option is downloading the desired software program off of the internet and loading the software that way.
*UPDATE* I’ve had my netbook for a few weeks now and it has proven to be one of the best electronic purchases I have ever made. The ability to type and organize my notes while in class is amazing, I will never go back to taking notes by hand. Also, the independent operating system that you can access without booting up the full windows 7 is phenomenal. It allows me to turn on my computer and be up in running in less than 8 seconds. I can access music, email, pictures, skype, chat, and the internet all from this quick boot-up feature. I simply can’t say enough good about this netbook. Pure and simple – A Great Buy!
Nobody Mentions One of the Best Features
This computer comes with a built-in instant operating system (IOS) that is independent of Windows. You can start the computer and quickly bring up a simplified web browser and email tool. The WI-FI capable IOS launches quickly so email or favorite web sites are easy to check. For more operating features and printing, Windows can be launched with the usual longer boot-up time.
The IOS is mentioned briefly in HP’s official product specs, but I think they could make a strong case for the value of it.
I did not know the IOS existed when I bought this, but now I find it to be my favorite feature of the machine.
My review would be five star if the operating system were a full Windows 7 instead of the somewhat crippled starter edition.
Battery Life LONGER than stated in description!
1st I want to say I love this netbook. Description says up to 3.75 hrs battery life??? If you go to HP website the battery life is up to 8 hrs(without wireless on). So far I have gotten 5 hrs of constant use with wireless on, brightest screen display and running multiple programs, before having to recharge battery.
Now as for battery size, pics are deceiving as is shown without battery. You can see exactly what it looks like with this battery attached if you look at the customer pics for the HP Mini 110-1030NR on this site. I happen to like the way this battery acts as a foot on the back for 2 reasons: more comfortable angle for typing and allows air circulation under the netbook so it doesn’t get so hot. But, if you need it to be completely flat for carrying, then this may not work for you. Fits just fine in my purse with battery, so works for me.
As for performance, I have had it for 1 week and so far am extremely impressed. The Windows 7 starter program works fine, but I opted to upgrade to the Home edition, which I love(was only $79 to upgrade). Windows 7 runs perfectly and has a lot of cool new features and is definetely the best Windows OS so far. I also appreciated that the media card reader will take my XD cards, as a lot do not. I have added a wireless laser mouse and am going to upgrade the memory to 2gb. By far, my favorite thing is the portability of this fully functioning computer. I am so excited about Amazon’s Kindle for PC program coming out next month, which will allow my netbook to be a book reader also.
Couldn’t be happier unless anyone can tell me how to keep my teenage daughter away from it!!! LOL
